As another year draws to a close, coaches often find themselves encouraging clients to pause, reflect, and realign — yet how often do we give ourselves that same gift? December is an ideal time to turn the mirror inward, to slow down long enough to notice not just what we’ve done, but who we’ve become in the process.

Reflection is more than reviewing achievements or missed goals; it’s a practice of awareness. It invites us to explore the deeper story beneath our experiences — the lessons learned, the patterns revealed, and the quiet moments of growth that might otherwise go unnoticed. For coaches, reflection nurtures self-awareness and empathy, helping us show up with greater presence and authenticity for the people we serve.

Ask yourself:

What moments this year brought me the most fulfilment

or energy? Where did I experience resistance, and what might that resistance be teaching me? How have I evolved in my capacity to listen, support, or lead?

Taking time to capture these insights — perhaps through journaling, conversation, or a reflective walk — helps to integrate learning and close the year with gratitude.

But reflection is only half the story. Once we’ve looked back, future visioning allows us to look forward with clarity and intention. It’s the art of seeing beyond the present — of imagining the kind of coach, leader, or human we want to become and the impact we wish to create. Visioning is not about rigid goal setting; it’s about connecting to purpose. It asks: What is calling me forward? What does the next evolution of my practice, community, or life look like?

You can even do this as a visualisation exercise.

• Where do you want to be in a years time?

• What do you want to have achieved?

• How will you be dressed?

• What will you be doing?

• What environment will you be in? etc

• What will you hear, smell, be able to touch?

Anything else that will make it come alive and be really real for you.

Just as you would with your clients – you can then do a deeply relaxed visualisation exercise by imagining all of the above. Re-do the exercise as often as possible and maybe create your own ‘Vision Board’ to go alongside it.

When we vision from a place of reflection, we align our future with our truth. We design from wisdom rather than reaction. We allow possibility to meet purpose.

As you close out this year, give yourself permission to pause. Reflect with compassion, vision with courage, and step into the year ahead with renewed intention. The best coaching you’ll ever do may begin with the conversation you have with yourself.
